Bringing your Kitten Home
Kitten Proofing
If you have kids, you are halfway there. If you've ever heard of baby proofing, you are halfway there. Know that Savannahs are extremely inquisitive creatures. They can and WILL get into anything you let them. Drawers, cabinets, closets, boxes, the list is utterly endless. If you think it may be a problem, it will be. Using child locks to keep drawers and cabinets closed will be your best friend.
Get down on your hands and knees, look at what is chewable, what is potentially dangerous, and clean it up. You might be silly but trust me, that last thing you need is to be rushing to the Emergency vet with a blockage because you overlooked a problem. Be ready to keep your charging cables hidden. They look very much like toys to your new kitten. Plastic bags are a HUGE no no. They are easily ingested and can cause massive problems. Small rubber stoppers and chewable toys are also dangerous.
Believe it or not, but this new tiny 5 lb ball of energy can and will knock over grandmas antic vase. Make sure all heavy and breakable objects are out of sight or secured in place before your new kitten comes home. Check out Quakehold. It is what museums use to keep their objects in place.

Quarantine

During the first 2-4 weeks that your new kitten comes home, you will need to isolate them from the rest of your household. This isn't because we want to torture you or the cat. No. If you end up rushing the process of bonding, you will end up with a scared, skittish and usure cat that may result in behavior problems later in life. This is not our goal, as we want you to have a well adjusted feline.
Your Quarantine space should be a medium sized room for you to spend one-on-one time with the kitten. It should be neither too cluttered nor too empty, allowing enough hiddey holes and toys to allow your kitten the proper enrichment he/she needs at their young age. During Quarantine, we highly recommend spending time playing and getting to know your kitten. All Quarantines are minimum of 2 weeks, regardless of how well adjusted your kitten is.
During Quarantine, under no circumstances, should your new kitten come into contact with him/her. This is not only so that the other animals (dogs, cats, etc.) get accustomed to the new smell of your kitten (and vice versa) but it keeps any potential illnesses from your household (and god forbid your kitten) separated
What We Feed and Recomend
We are a strong advocate of raw feeding our cats. We have researched long and hard about the proper way to feed, and have a custom made blend for our kittens and Queens. If you are interested in feeding kibble or wet, we can discuss transitioning your kitten onto either after a deposit has been placed. As this will add more effort for us, we need to be sure that you are taking the kitten home.
Wet food is feed as a supplement and treat to their existing raw diet. The exact brand changes depending on our mood. We always use grain free limited ingredient wet food for our kittens.
In the end, we here at Rainbow Savannahs are here to bring you the perfect addition into your family. We prove constant care of your new kitten from birth until they leave our hands and go into yours. We are here to guide you and fill your life with a joy that will fill your every moment for the next 15 plus years. They are as much our babies as they are yours.
You will get everything you put into your kitten. The more love you give them, the more love you will receive. Giving proper daily care, mental stimulation, exercise, and possitive reinforcement while they are young are so very important to creating a well-adjusted adult cat. You will have to provide beds, scratching posts and toys. There are hundreds of choices!
From the time that you put down on your Savannah kitten until that fateful moment they are let lose in their quarantine feels like a lifetime. However, that time is very important. For them, and you. Like preparing for a skin child, you need to make sure that the transition from our home to yours is seemless and as stress free as possible. During that time, your kitten is learning everything it can from myself and X as well as their mother. Cleaning and eating, and the proper liter habits. All of this before they come home.
As always, our goal is to provide you with the best and craziest new addition that you will fall in love with. Healthy, happy and exotic love.
